WHAT ARE DRONES?
Originally built for military purposes, drones have, especially in recent years, experienced exponential growth in a wide range of working realities.
They originated as real attack weapons or tools for military exercises in the form of remotely piloted bombers, flying targets or guided missiles and then, over time, found their commercial connotation in distribution to the general public in the form of small quadricopters, hexacopters and octocopters.
Currently, drones are working in so many areas, and with continued advances in technologies these machines will be more robust and useful in the near future as well. Drones are now present in all areas where mankind wants to work.
The years from 2010 to the present have seen an explosion and advancement in technology in which, for the first time in history, there has been more development in the commercial than in the military sphere.
THE DRONE MARKET IN EUROPE
According to the latest reports, as of today, there are about 10,000 units of commercially registered drones in Europe, and the same reports predict that by 2025 there will be 200,000, twenty times as many, and 400,000 in 2035
Applications have become increasingly diverse and are continuing to do so at an impressive rate: energy sector, public and private security, media, insurance, real estate, film and TV, telecommunications, archaeology, mining, and construction are just some of the fields of use.
MAIN INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS OF DRONES
- Agriculture: environmental protection agencies already use drone technology for livestock management and crop detection. In the future, farmers and ranchers will use drones that can strategically monitor and fertilize crops.
- Conservation: drones are being used to monitor endangered species and map changes in various ecosystems around the world.
- Delivery: anything that can be transported by courier can also be delivered by drones. This is a market that is still in its infancy but is developing.
- Environmental disaster management: drones can go to places where humans cannot access, so they are an ideal solution for high-risk search and rescue operations. Same for delivering emergency supplies to remote locations and disaster areas.
- Logistics: drones can help tremendously within large warehouses for inventory management. Technologies for transporting packages between neighboring warehouses have also been considered for some time.
- Film and photography: drones are now in common use even among low-budget producers and filmmakers, and Hollywood now has fleets of drones on payroll for aerial shots and beyond.
- Internet Service Providers: prominent companies such as Facebook and Google have been experimenting with solar-powered drones for the past few years for the purpose of bringing connectivity to places that are difficult to reach with ordinary fiber. This could transform connectivity as we know it.
- Law enforcement: police forces are increasingly resorting to the use of drones, and we will likely begin to see unmanned aircraft complementing the police presence on the ground.
THE ITALIAN DRONE MARKET
The business related to drones and advanced air mobility systems is also growing in Italy to reach 145 million with +23% compared to 2022.
This is a service business currently carried out by 664 companies because 42 companies have ceased operations in the post-Covid period. As for the immediate future, the sentiment of entrepreneurs active in this sector is positive: as many as 81% expect strong market expansion in the next 3 years, and early data for 2024 confirm double-digit growth.
At the application level, drones are mainly used for inspections and surveys (44 percent), transportation of people (23 percent) and security and surveillance (20 percent). These are the most common, but there is also filming and amateur video shooting.
DEMIX GROUP AND DRONE PROJECTS

Demix Group has already cultivated experience in the drone industry by taking part in the CORB project, through which a high-tech marine drone was designed that can move and travel on water autonomously thanks to the installed GPS sensor.

It is currently partnering with Global Drone Solutions (GDS), a pioneering provider of advanced drone technologies and services, with which it aims to offer a wide range of cutting-edge drone solutions in order to revolutionize conventional operations in various fields such as:
- Agriculture
- Construction
- Topography
- Resource management
